The Invasion of the Avatars!

Avatars, so what’s happening to the internet? Well it’s evolving, it is creating life, well we are creating virtual life, avatars.*

Avatars have been around for a few years now, it is merely a computerised version of yourself that people can see. PC games like “The Sims” enable you to create a person or a “Sim” so that you can control their lives. Games like “World of Warcraft” and “Second Life” also use the idea of controlling another you, in the virtual world, i.e: the avatar. “Runescape” has been around since 2001 where you can also trade and socialise in a fantasy world. However, it has become extreme. On the internet there is an avatar world, you can create your own avatar and even a house and a company, you can earn cash and buy things. So what’s new? I hear you cry. Well, you can actually convert you virtual cash into real cash, and people have been getting rich for Eons through this virtual world. You can get married and divorced, you can form enemies and friends and you can even get rich from just playing on the internet. You can live a whole life, experience the highs and lows and all before lunch!

I have got my own avatar, I have my own virtual company and I have my own home. And guess what, I’m only 14! All on the internet! But it raises issues, are we ignoring our own world, forgetting what we have, confining ourselves to an infinite expanse of information, terrorism and pop-ups that is the internet. There has always been this idea that our world is just an advanced computer program, or the “Matrix”, are we playing God? Those christian cry babies may say, “the internet is evil, only God should have that much power”. But didn’t H.G Wells once say, “The more advanced a race becomes, the closer they are to the great divine beings”? But the idea of our world being merely a computer game of some advanced being is basically what the Bible is saying, we are merely pawns and the Earth is his boardgame. To end this I shall simply say:
“I think so therefore I am”.

Please post your say and tell me what you think.
