The Field Of My Tedious Dreams (Part 2)

Part two of Chris Wells’ growing epic. He promises it will all make sense eventually…

Steven sat on his lawn with tears in his eyes as he realized that the dog must be dead. He would normally answer his call if he heard it, and his bed was right where a lorry and about 2 tons of rubble lay. His house was large detached with four bedrooms and well kept, they never needed a house that big, but it was cheap and they were trying for a family, so it was perfect for their future. Now there was a lorry about two thirds the height of the house and their future that had torn right through the middle of it all.

A black Volkswagen pulled up and Lisa stepped out the car, her eyes were wide and in shock as she looked at her damaged home. She then saw Steven on the lawn, just about to cry, and she ran to him and held him in her arms. They both sat silent in each other’s arms until a policemen tapped Steven on the shoulder.

The policemen asked me if I saw anything, I replied I hadn’t, I told him there was a man with me that said there was no one in the car, the policemen looked confused for a moment, and asked where this man was. I turned around and Charlie was gone. After I described him I looked at the time and realized I was meant to be home about 2 hours ago, I gave the policeman my number and he let me go. When I arrived home the house was empty, on the table was a note from my mum telling me she was going to be home at 7, my phone said it was about 6:30. My mum and dad had been separated for just over a year now, and I still expect to hear my dad come home every night, but he never does, I haven’t seen him for over a year. I went upstairs and got changed, I then thought it was best I had a sleep considering the day’s events made me more exhausted then normal.

I dreamed I was in the café again, everything around me was full with motion and there was the man or woman with the newspaper covering their face. ‘You should try and talk to her,’ the mystery person said, it was a male voice.

Before I knew it, I was awake and in school talking to Charlotte, a girl who I only met today, she was in my drama class and after a mini performance we had to do, we both got on really well. She asked me if I’d like to hang around with her and some of her mates, me realizing that most of the things I did with my friends was to sit around with an odd conversation going on, I said a cheerful, instant yes. At break I followed her to a tree next to the end of the concrete of the playground and under it was a wooden picnic table, that had obviously been moved there, under it was a group of about 5 people just sitting there having the odd conversation between them. I then noticed the girl from ICT was there, my heart stopped, she stood up and hugged Charlotte. The girl’s name was Rose, and once again our eyes met and once again the images started to play in my mind. I’ve fancied people before, but never like this, and as the day passed my feelings for her got stronger and stronger. By the end of the day we exchanged numbers so we could text and call each other. I was absolutely full of energy for the first time in my life and I was happier than I ever had been. Once again I found myself walking home alone, then I heard someone shout my name, it was Charlie. I looked at my phone and saw it was 3:30 and I had to be home by 5 so I ended up drifting around parks and the town centre while talking to my new friend. When I asked him why did he leave when the police came, he said he never feels comfortable giving his name and address to people. I told him about Rose and my feelings for her, he smiled to himself and told me “If it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be, if your feelings are as pure and as strong as you’ve said to me, then I believe you and her will go far.” He went on to tell me about his wife, about how they had been together for over 17 years, how they met at a restaurant after both people they were meant to meet didn’t show. The person he was meant to meet was his friend who was going to let him stay with him. He had no money and nobody that lived nearby. This was also before mobile phones were popular so he would have been stranded if he didn’t meet his future wife Lisa. He started off as the man on the coach but one thing led to another and they eventually fell in love and got married.

While he was telling me this he had a calm happy smile across his face, almost like she was there with him holding his hand. He wiped a tear from his eye and looked directly at me. “Love is the greatest thing in the world, it doesn’t matter how old you are, or who you are, it will happen at one point and when it does, nothing else will matter, only you and her. Promise me you’ll never let her go.” I nodded and looked at the time, it was 4:56 and I had a text message. I said my good-byes and ran home.

The text message was from Rose, it said ‘heylo, hows r u? I’m jus lying around in my room being bored, so I thought id txt ya. wats you up 2?’ As simple the text was, my heart was racing, I was texted back straightaway, I said that I was alright, and that I was just walking home after drifting around town for a bit, I asked her how she was and sent the text. Thinking about her lying about in her room made me smile and increase my need for her. By the time I sent the text I was at home sitting on my computer. I got a reply, it told me she was depressed and she was thinking about ‘stuff.’ Curiosity got the better of me, as well as worry, so I decided to call her.

I could hear my heart in my ears as I the phone rang, she picked up after the 3rd ring, I could hear in her voice that she had been crying. Deep painful worry had taken over me, I asked her how she was and she replied almost exactly like her text; that she was down about ‘stuff.’ I asked what stuff but she replied it didn’t matter, she let out a sigh, my heart was faster now. Not because I fancied her, well that could have been a little bit to do with it, but I was generally worried what was up with her. She told me she had to go as she hated hearing her own voice, I let out a disappointed ‘Ok’ and she hung up. I let out a sigh and went to bed, as I had nothing else better to do.

I woke up in the field of my tedious dreams, the vast empty flat land was as far as I could see, and everything was still, except for one raven flying around in the deep crimson sky. I looked around; and it was silent, warm and it was dead air. The raven began to slowly fall; it stood out with its pitch-black feathers on the dark red of the sky. Something caught my eye, it was Rose, she was in her school uniform, her normal school trousers and a white long sleeved shirt. She stared directly at me with her gorgeous eyes, the eyeliner around her eyes had run very noticeably, she’d been crying. There was still not a single noise. She really was beautiful, even with smudged eyeliner down her pretty emotionless face, I just wanted to hug her and kiss her like I would in, my other fantasy/dreams, but this was different, the mood wasn’t right. There was a calm, slow depressing taste in the air. Her left wrist started to bleed underneath her shirt, she still didn’t move, but now tears were falling slowly down her emotionless face. I began to run over to her but I could only walk, as I slowly drew closer she collapsed without a sound. Everything was silent and still, the raven was on the floor next to her lifeless body. I ran towards the bird and it began to fly off, then in mid-air, it faded away into dust.

I woke up; the depressing aura had gone and was replaced with panic as I noticed I was going to be late for school. I had double design, which meant I didn’t get to see or speak to Rose for at least 2 hours. This lesson I had no writing to do, all I had to do for the whole lesson was carve a mobile phone design out of foam. I couldn’t think straight, the minutes dragged on as I waited and contemplated what to say to Rose, I had to make sure she wasn’t upset, and I needed to find out what was wrong.

Suddenly I was in the airport café, the man behind the newspaper was there, and he told me, “It’s not what you think.”

I was back in my classroom and only five minutes to go until the end of the lesson. After 2nd lesson everyone went to their form room for twenty minutes as to get messages and stuff, then it was break. I sat down and was thinking about what the man behind the newspaper had said, and what could be up with Rose. At break I pretty much ran to the tree, and sitting there was all the people from yesterday, as well as Rose who was laughing with the boy next to her. I didn’t know his name but he had long deep black hair and wore make-up that made him look like a Goth. Rose seemed to be awfully close in every sense of the word with him, and then she kissed him on the cheek and instantly my heart broke in two. The boy didn’t seem bothered at all by it and he just acted like nothing happened. As Rose saw me she stood up and I saw her smile, that looked faked anyway had became the emotionless face of my dream, she looked into my eyes and said a hello. I sat on the bench between the gothic boy and Rose; I could smell the fruity scent of her hair. As we all started to talk and joke around she was smiling and laughing again, I wasn’t at all sure whether she was putting it on or she was genuinely happy.
